Meghalaya is a state located in the north eastern part of India. It is bordered by Assam in East, North and West and Bangladesh in South.
Shillong is the capital, the largest city and a popular hill station of Meghalaya. Other major cities in Meghalaya include – Baghmara, Cherrapunji, Tura, etc.
Official Languages of the state include Khasi, Pnar, Garo, Hindi and English.
Around 70 % of population of Meghalaya is Christian and only 13 % are Hindus and hence Diwali is not a major festival of the state.
Diwali Celebrations in Meghalaya :
In Meghalaya Diwali is celebrated by Hindu’s who constitute a small portion of the total population of the state.
Just like in other parts of the country, the Hindu’s of Meghalaya celebrate Diwali by drawing colourful Rangoli’s outside their homes to welcome goddess of wealth – Lakshmi, wear new clothes, eat lots of sweets, exchange gifts, wear new clothes, decorate their homes with lights and diya’s, spent time with friends and family members, etc.
