Dhanteras is the first day of the five day Diwali festival. Also known as Dhanwantari Triodasi or Dhantrayodashi the day is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin.
People often worship Goddess Lakshmi – the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity on this day. But this day is also dedicated to worship of Lord Dhanvantari – the Lord of medicine and health who is believed to be personification of Lord Vishnu.
Lord Dhanvantari is believed to be physician of Gods and also God of Ayurveda.
According to the Legends, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the Ocean of Milk and appeared with a pot of amrita (nectar) during Samudra Manthana whilst the ocean was being churned by the Devas and Asuras.
In 2018, Dhanteras will be celebrated on Monday, 5th November 2018.
